Many people undertake comprehensive springtime house cleaning, shaking off the cobwebs of winter and making the house fresh and tidy for the warmer months ahead. Spring is also an ideal time to clean your car; after collecting dirt and grime all winter, most cars can use a thorough spring-cleaning. From the body and tires to the auto glass and interior, a little effort can transform the look and feel of your vehicle. Here are a few tips to get you started.

How to Clean Your Car for Spring

1. Wash the Exterior by Hand

The convenience of pulling into a drive-through car wash is undeniable, but taking the time to hand-wash your vehicle will add a more personalized and intensive level of shine. Use a scrub mitt designed for cars and a solution of mild vehicle soap and warm water. A stiff brush is perfect for removing tire grime. Rinse the exterior with a garden hose at a gentle but consistent pressure.

Tackle windows with a soft microfiber cloth and an ammonia-free auto glass cleaner. Squeegee the surfaces dry rather than letting them air-dry, as this will remove any potential particles that may have gotten trapped in the water during the scrubbing.

2. Vacuum the Interior

auto glassThroughout the winter, a car's interior catches all the dirt, sand, salt, and gravel from boots and shoes. Use a vacuum cleaner with a wand attachment and brush head to get into all the crevices of the seats, headrests, and floors. Run the attachment across vents and consoles and around the inside of your auto glass to remove any dirt and dust accumulation. Shake out and vacuum off the floor mats before replacing them.

3. Clear Out the Trunk

The trunk can easily become a de facto storage spot throughout the winter, housing shovels, ice scrapers, backup boots and clothing, and emergency gear. Take out anything you don't need for the warmer months—but keep the emergency gear in place—and vacuum the trunk. This will also give you extra usable space in case you need to haul any larger items this summer.
