Furnaces make a wide variety of noises throughout the day. Even when all is in order, they hum, click, and rattle. However, when something is wrong, they make more unpleasant sounds. Below is a guide to some common furnace noises, what they mean, and how an HVAC contractor can help.

What Do Different Furnace Noises Indicate?

1. A Loud Bang

If you hear an explosive bang, it likely means the furnace is experiencing a delayed ignition. This means the gas is not igniting when it should and instead builds up in the burn chamber. When it finally ignites, there is enough gas present to cause a sudden bang. It’s startling and potentially dangerous.

The cause is normally a dirty burner or a problem with the furnace igniter. An HVAC contractor can inspect the system, determine the cause, and put a stop to it to preserve the unit’s functionality.

2. Squealing

HVAC contractorA loud, high-pitched squealing is normally the result of a worn fan belt or motor belt. Instead of sitting firmly in its channel and turning as the pulley turns, a worn belt will slide against the metal and cause this loud, annoying sound. Have this addressed before the belt breaks, or you could face a total system shutdown on a chilly night.

3. Clunking or Clattering

A brief rattle is normal, but extended clattering noises are not. Repetitive clunking or clattering could indicate one of the furnace's moving components is loose. For instance, the motor or fan might have loose mounts that allow it to shake in its housing. This needs to be fixed before the component shakes completely loose and causes the furnace to stop working entirely.
