A vehicle inspection ensures that a car is free of safety defects and is fit to drive on public roads. Alabama law requires an inspection before an automobile is transferred to a new owner. This applies whether the car is purchased a new, from a used dealership, or sold or gifted on a private basis. Find out what the inspection process entails below.

Why Is Vehicle Inspection Required?

Aside from the safety aspect, inspection is linked to the establishment of ownership. The Alabama Motor Vehicle Title and Tag office carries out the inspection before an automobile can be formally registered to a new owner. As long as the car remains in the new owner's possession, it doesn't need a new inspection.

You must also present odometer disclosure statements and insurance details when the vehicle is registered. While Alabama does not require an emissions inspection, you can get insurance discounts or tax breaks if your car is deemed eco-friendly.

What If Your Car Fails Vehicle Inspection?

If your car fails inspection, you will be provided with a list of repairs that need to be made to pass. These fixes must be completed before the transfer of ownership can occur. There is no time limit on when you need to have the repairs completed. However, if you are registering an out-of-state or new vehicle, registration must be completed within 20 days.
