One of the regular parts of your dental visits will be dental X-rays. These images use low-level radiation to take pictures inside your mouth so your dentist can check for abnormalities. They're incredibly safe and a necessary part of the dental process, but if you're still unsure about the procedure, learn more below.

When Do You Need Dental X-Rays?

Dental X-rays are performed regularly so dentists can check up on your teeth. If a child has healthy teeth, they should get X-rays every one to two years. However, children who have apparent decay or who are at risk for decay should get X-rays every six to 12 months. Similarly, adults with healthy teeth need X-rays every two to three years, while adults with tooth decay or other issues should receive them every six to 18 months.

Children may also need more X-rays to monitor their adult teeth, and adults may need more frequent ones to look at periodontal disease or jaw problems.

How Are X-Rays Performed?

The process of getting a dental X-ray is surprisingly simple. You might be taken to a separate room at your dentist's office, or you might sit in the same chair where your hygienist cleans your teeth. Your dental tech will put a lead apron on you to protect you from radiation, and then a sensor will be placed in your mouth to help get a clear picture. If you have a strong gag reflex, let the technician know, and they can find a way to make you more comfortable. Then, the X-rays will be performed from different angles. Afterward, your dentist will examine them and discuss the results with you.
