There are many different types of water, including some of the top choices, natural spring water and mineral water. However, what makes each of these types of water distinct, and which should you choose for you and your family? Here’s what you need to know.

Natural Spring Water

Natural spring water is collected directly from an underground spring. For it to qualify as natural spring water, it can’t pass through a traditional municipal water system, nor can it be chemically filtered. It is, however, protected against pollution and must fulfill certain safety standards, so it is safe to drink.

Spring water tastes fresh, and you can tell it’s never been treated or boiled. It’s closer to the clean taste of water that you’d expect, rather than the unique taste of mineral water.

Mineral Water

When it goes over and through the stones, it picks up certain minerals along the way, which makes it different from spring water. These minerals generally include magnesium, calcium, potassium, bicarbonate, iron, zinc, and sodium. To qualify as mineral water, it needs to have at least 250 ppm total dissolved solids. Mineral water must be packaged near the spring, and it cannot be altered, except for carbonation and removing excess iron or magnesium. When it is carbonated, the carbon dioxide needs to come from the spring itself.

Mineral water has a distinctive taste due to the minerals it contains. Some mineral water is defined as “soft” or “hard,” which describes the amounts of calcium and magnesium in the water. Soft mineral water tastes a little salty, while hard mineral water tastes earthier.

Mineral water has several health benefits since it’s a source of many minerals humans need in their diets. Mineral water may help promote bone health, lower high blood pressure, help you have a healthy heart, and even prevent constipation.
