A leaking washing machine can have several causes. Some are easy to fix on your own, but other potential issues need professional washer repair. If you can identify the source of the leak, you can minimize damage until repairs can be performed.

What Washer Repairs Do You Need?

1. Leaking at the Back

Whether you have a front- or top-loading washing machine, the water supply and drain hoses always connect at the back. These are the areas most susceptible to leakage.

Try tightening the hoses. If that doesn't help, check whether the drain hose is clogged by unscrewing it and looking for any lodged debris. Unscrew the tube over a bucket to avoid spilling water everywhere.

2. Leaking at the Front

Washer RepairOn a front-loading washing machine, the most obvious culprit is the seal around the door. The gasket won't close correctly if it's dirty, so clean it first and check for any damage.

If you have a top-loading washer, a leak can be due to an unbalanced load or manual adjustment of the controls during a cycle. If the problem continues for multiple loads, you may have a clogged or crooked overflow tube. A professional might need to fix this using a drain snake.

3. Leaking at the Bottom

In a top-loading washing machine, a leak underneath needs immediate professional washer repair. The motor is in this area, and if the leaking water touches the motor, it can permanently damage the appliance.

The issue isn't quite as bad in a front-loading machine since the motor is positioned differently, but you'll still need a professional to address a leaking washer drum.
