If you’re like most people in America, you’ve got a closet filled to the brim with clothes, shoes, and accessories, most of which you hardly ever wear. Maybe you have issues with fit, style, or damage, or you’re drawn to the minimalist lifestyle. Perhaps you want some extra cash for a vacation or to pay off debt. Whatever the reason, with the right home organization system, you can quickly identify which items aren’t being used and give them a new home or purpose.

What to Do With Clothes You No Longer Want or Need

1. Try Consignment

Most areas have consignment stores that buy like-new clothing and other items and resell them. Some make you an offer while you’re in the store, and some take a few days to sort through your items.

You can always try a yard sale, as well. If you don’t have enough belongings by yourself, ask some neighbors if they want to join in a co-op sale. Keep your items as organized as possible so people can sort through them quickly.

2. Donate

Organizations like Dress for Success® and Vietnam Veterans of America accept and even pick up donations in many areas. You could also find a local homeless shelter or donate to a rummage sale or school fundraiser.

Just as easily, find a friend with similar tastes and give them some old-fashioned hand-me-downs. This is especially common for children’s clothing but works for adults, as well.

3. Sell Online

Also, try sites like Craigslist® or Facebook® Marketplace, which post your items so that locals can view and purchase them. Ensure you take plenty of pictures and write a detailed description for each posting.

4. Repurpose

Many otherwise unwearable clothing items can be worn while painting or doing yardwork. You could even turn some materials into household rags or upcycle your favorite items into scrunchies, pet blankets, or even quilts.

5. Toss

After exploring all options, some belongings simply can’t be saved or repurposed and should be tossed. The home organization benefits of decluttering your closet should outweigh the guilt of throwing an unneeded item away.
