Tooth decay tends to develop slowly. Dentists can usually identify and treat it before symptoms actually develop. If you don't schedule regular cleanings and exams, though, minor decay can turn into cavities. Here are a few symptoms that might prompt you to make an appointment.

4 Signs of Dental Cavities

1. Sensitivity

Cavities can make the affected teeth extremely sensitive to hot and cold temperatures. Once the enamel has decayed, the underlying layer of dentin is exposed. Dentin consists of microscopic tubules that lead directly to the nerves inside the tooth, so contact from hot and cold foods and drinks can prompt a painful reaction.

2. Discoloration

As the inside of a tooth decays, the outer surface can become discolored. If you notice a small white, black, or brown spot on your tooth, head to the dentist as soon as possible. Generally speaking, the darker the stain, the more advanced the decay.

3. Pain

dentistCavities typically don’t hurt. However, if you have a toothache that persists for more than a week, it may indicate an underlying oral health issue. In some cases, the cavity can become so large that it presses on a nerve, or it develops into an abscess.

4. Texture

As cavities build, they can work their way through the outer surface of the teeth, causing actual pits. If you feel a hole or jagged edge when scraping your tongue across a particular tooth, visit your dentist for a comprehensive oral exam.
