If you’re pregnant, you understand the importance of taking excellent care of yourself, but also it’s essential to extend that care to your oral health. Pregnancy can increase the likelihood of several dental health issues, and learning more about them can help you work with your family dentist to prepare for the changes ahead.

What Should You Know About Your Dental Health When Pregnant?

1. Dental Changes

Pregnancy causes higher levels of hormones like progesterone and estrogen. This influx of hormones increases the blood to flow your gums, making them more sensitive to bacteria, plaque, and other irritants. As a result, your gums may feel more tender and bleed more than usual.

Behavioral changes could also affect your teeth. Cravings may lead you to eat more foods that are bad for your teeth, like sweets. You may also feel too nauseous to follow your pre-pregnancy dental routine due to morning sickness.

2. Increased risk

You might also notice pregnancy tumors, which are non-cancerous and form as a result of plaque buildup. They usually appear between the teeth and will go away on their own either during pregnancy or after your baby is born.

3. Preventative Measures

Brush at least twice a day, using fluoride toothpaste to help fight tooth decay. If your teeth and gums are extra sensitive, try switching to a softer toothbrush. Floss at least once a day, and if you notice consistent or abnormal bleeding, consult your family dentist. The dentist may also schedule more frequent cleanings to address increased plaque levels in your mouth.

Regularly examine your mouth and keep your dentist informed of any changes, like abscesses, so they can develop a treatment plan.
