A grinder pump is a mechanism connected to and placed in or near your septic tank. Its job is to turn on when wastewater in your tank reaches a designated level. When the pump is engaged, it draws wastewater into its blades to grind solids into a slurry for release into the drain. When the grinder isn’t working correctly, it can create a host of plumbing repair problems—not only in your septic system but also inside your home. Here’s what might go wrong with your grinder pump.

Why Do Grinder Pumps Stop Working?

1. Blockage or Clog

The wastewater from your home flows from sinks, drains, washing machines, and toilets to the tank. When solids that don’t easily break down enter a tank, they can cause blockages and clogs. A grinder pump may stop working if it can’t handle a large piece of refuse, such as a greasy hair ball.

To limit plumbing repairs, avoid flushing any items down toilets and drains that may interfere with blade operation, including grease and oil, cat litter, napkins, diapers, and wipes.

2. Float Device

If the sensor that assesses float level fails, the pump may stop working or to turn on when it shouldn’t. If a pump runs when it shouldn’t, the motor may burn out and cease operation. No matter the reason the float malfunctions, you’ll need to secure plumbing repairs to have it replaced.

3. Loss of Electricity

A pump is powered by electricity. If it stops running, it may have lost power. Check the pump’s control panel and the power outlet. If your pump is getting electricity but isn’t working, something’s wrong with the pump that may require repair or replacement.
