Dentists perform a few different types of periodontal treatment to help patients achieve optimal oral health. Each procedure is tailored to address the effects of gum disease or improve the look and function of your smile. Whether you experience tooth sensitivity or want to change a gummy smile, one of these procedures could be right for you.

What Are Some of the Types of Periodontal Treatment?

1. Scaling & Root Planing

This is a deep cleaning periodontal treatment that helps prevent early-stage gum disease from progressing.

To perform the procedure, the dentist uses an ultrasonic scaling tool to remove tartar and plaque from the gum line and the surface of the teeth. They then apply an antimicrobial agent below the gum line to eliminate present oral bacteria.

2. Gum Grafting

periodontal treatmentGum recession is a common symptom of gum disease. If the tooth roots are exposed, the gums will need to be extended to prevent infection and discomfort. This reduces sensitivity and improves aesthetics.

During the treatment, the dentist removes tartar and bacteria from the teeth, then applies a local anesthetic to prepare the area. Depending on how much tissue the patient has, the dentist may use material from a tissue bank or the patient’s palate. They then attach the tissue to the affected area to cover the teeth roots. The area heals in about six weeks.

3. Crown Lengthening Surgery

There are times when tissue grows over an extensive portion of the teeth, which can be a cosmetic issue. This may also impede restoration procedures for chips. To expose more of the teeth and prevent gum damage, dentists perform crown lengthening.

During this procedure, the dentist will separate the gums from the teeth by removing a small amount of tissue. The result is longer-looking teeth for a more attractive smile.
