Everyone experiences occasional worry in their daily lives, but chronic stress can take a big toll on your health. Since 1992, the month of April has been designated National Stress Awareness Month to increase awareness of this common yet misunderstood epidemic. However, while millions across the country struggle with high levels of stress, they don’t take it to their primary care clinic. Here are some reasons why stress should be taken seriously.

The Effects of Stress on the Body

Stress can lead to a variety of health concerns. While its effects differ between patients, it most commonly results in mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression.

If not treated, it can also lead to heart disease, insomnia, digestive problems, and immune system damage. Headaches can also be a factor of stress, as well as anger, high blood pressure, and diabetes. None of these symptoms should be ignored.

How to Cope with Stress

Visit a primary care clinic and talk through your symptoms and your perceived levels of stress. Your doctor can determine how serious your symptoms are from a non-biased perspective and prescribe stress-reducing techniques like the following.

Exercise

Exercising for 20 to 30 minutes a day can greatly reduce stress. Just walking around the block and taking generous breaths of air will take your mind off of current stressors and refresh your mood.

Relax

Learning how to relax can sound impossible for those dealing with chronic stress, so start with hobbies you enjoy, particularly those that involve relaxation, such as meditating, journaling, and yoga. You might not always find these activities easy when you are stressed, but persist, and you will notice improvements.

Laugh

Even if you don’t think you have time for it, find a small period to fit in something that makes you smile. Calling a friend or family member or watching a breezy TV show can balance your stress hormones and improve your overall health.
