If you are planning a kitchen remodel, many of the decisions you’ll make will be impacted by the layout you choose for your new space. There are many ways to optimize work stations while also ensuring you have proper storage and dining areas included. Here are five different types of kitchens to consider for your design.

How Can You Redesign Your Kitchen?

1. Galley

If you have a smaller space, a galley kitchen is an ideal choice. Sometimes called a walk-through kitchen, this design consists of two parallel walls of counters and cabinets with a walkway between them. Galley kitchens do not have corner cabinets, and the walls are usually optimized with storage options or work surfaces. Galley designs are best for only one cook.

2. L-Shaped

This style sets countertops and appliances on two perpendicular walls, forming an L-shape. Depending on your square footage, the length of each side will vary.

3. Horseshoe

Also called U-shaped, horseshoe kitchens feature three walls of cabinets, countertops, and appliances. Sometimes this layout is a combination of the L-shape design and an island in the center. This helps create a flow of traffic and allows a few cooks to work side by side.

4. Island

While islands can be part of other layouts, some kitchens make the island a focal point that houses appliances, storage, and often, seating. A mixture of pantries, cabinets, and drawers can be added along walls to complete the room.

5. Peninsula

A peninsula is similar to an island design, except that it’s connected on one side to a counter along the wall. This concept works better in kitchens that don’t have enough square footage for a full island. If you have an L-shaped room already in place, adding a peninsula can create a horseshoe with another surface for storage and working.
