If you are not completely satisfied with the results after years of shaving and waxing, you might decide to try another removal method, like laser hair removal. When performed by a licensed, professional, and experienced dermatologist, the procedure can provide soft, hairless, and smooth skin that lasts. If this is your first time undergoing the popular cosmetic enhancement, the following tips can help you prepare.

5 Laser Hair Removal Preparation Tips

1. Shave the Designated Area

It is generally recommended that you shave the area where the laser hair removal treatment will be applied. These include the bikini area, armpits, and legs. Prior shaving can help extract the hair root and minimize any burning below the skin’s surface. Consult with your dermatologist on how far in advance you should shave.

2. Discontinue Waxing & Plucking

At least a month or so before the treatment, stop professional and at-home plucking and waxing so that there will be enough roots for maximum hair removal.

3. Use Soap & Water

Before your first appointment, use a mild soap and warm water to thoroughly clean the skin to be treated. Avoid lotions, deodorant, makeup, perfumes, and other topical skin products. Depending on the product, the ingredients can form a barrier that prevents the laser hair removal treatment from working effectively.

4. Ask About Medications

Be sure to let your dermatologist know if you are taking any medications. Certain types may affect the procedure or skin. The laser hair removal treatments might need to be adjusted to accommodate the kind of medication you’re currently taking. Don’t stop taking your prescribed medicine before your first appointment.

5. Minimize Sun Exposure

Avoid direct exposure to the sun for at least two weeks before your first session. Sunburns can cause blisters, pain, and discoloration after laser hair removal. You should also avoid self-tanning products and tanning beds for the same reasons.
