An in-ground swimming pool provides you and your family with hours of summertime entertainment. Installing a pool is a big commitment in terms of finances and effort. Learn about three different types of pools below.

What Materials Are Commonly Used in Swimming Pools?

1. Concrete

Concrete is the most popular material for in-ground pools. After creating a hole in the ground, pool builders install steel-reinforced walls and cover them with wet concrete. Handymen then plaster and trowel smooth the concrete. Finally, they add a layer of paint.

One benefit of concrete is that it can be made into any shape. Concrete is durable and stable, and occasional re-plastering can preserve it even longer.

2. Fiberglass

You’ll receive what is essentially a giant shell, which is then lowered into an already excavated hole in the ground using a crane. These shells come in standard shapes, such as ovals or Ls. Fiberglass pools have a smooth finish that is durable and nonporous. As a result, they don’t require high levels of chemicals to maintain.

3. Vinyl

Vinyl pools are made from a single large piece of liner that is carefully fitted into an excavated hole in the ground. A steel or aluminum frame holds the liner in place. Most vinyl pools are rectangular or L-shaped. Vinyl is one of the easiest types of pools to install, requiring as little as a week to put in place. Vinyl liners can also be equipped with fungus and UV inhibitors, allowing for a longer lifespan.
