Estate jewelry refers to items that were previously owned. You can purchase such pieces—which are often vintage in nature—from pawn shops, antique stores, and estate sales. Before splurging on a diamond brooch or one-of-a-kind ring, though, you should determine the actual value of the piece. If you’re unsure how to do so, here are a few tips for getting started.

How to Evaluate Estate Jewelry

1. Look for Authenticating Stamps

If a piece of jewelry is stamped with 925, that means 92.5% of it is sterling silver, and the other 7.5% is comprised of alloy metals. Likewise, gold pieces are sometimes imprinted with their carat rating.

Authenticating stamps can reveal more than just details about the materials, though. For example, high-end brands like Tiffany & Co.® stamp a distinctive hallmark on every piece of jewelry they produce.

2. Review All Supporting Documents

Review any such documents closely to verify they are not forgeries. If the documents were faked, they might contain typos, blurred text, misspellings, omissions, or other errors.

3. Do Your Research

If you have a smartphone, take five minutes to research the piece online before buying it. Depending on how much information is available, you may be able to crosscheck the manufacturer, time period, and materials. While not a detailed appraisal, this will at least allow you to proceed with the sale with confidence.
