Children's teeth are softer and more sensitive than adult teeth, which makes them susceptible to a number of dental issues. Though the occasional cavity is not typically a major concern, there are some dental problems that parents should proactively help their children avoid; these problems can hinder the healthy development of the mouth and lead to more complex oral health challenges down the road. Here are a few common issues that dental care providers often see in children.

What Are the Most Common Dental Problems in Kids?

1. Tooth Decay

Certain foods, like sugar and carbohydrates, interact with the bacteria present in a child's mouth and produce acids that attack the teeth. These acids eat away tooth enamel and create small pits of decay, called cavities, that need to be remedied with a filling. Serious cases of tooth decay are highly preventable; be sure your child is adhering to good dental care practices like brushing and flossing twice a day and avoiding sweets.

2. Thumb-Sucking

dental careSucking a thumb is a comforting behavior for many kids. However, it can have detrimental effects on their oral health and development. The consistent sucking action can cause crooked teeth, misalignment of the jaw, improper growth in the roof of the mouth, and speech challenges. Most children will naturally stop sucking their thumb before the age of 5, but if it lasts beyond that, it's an issue you might want to bring up with your family doctor or dental care provider.

3. Teeth Grinding

Teeth grinding, or bruxism, is the act of rubbing the upper and lower teeth against one another, often unconsciously when sleeping. Children can grind their teeth because of a misalignment in the top and bottom teeth or as a response to pain, stress, or hyperactivity. A dental care professional can prescribe a comfortable mouthguard that your child wears to bed each night, which will cushion the teeth from the effects of grinding and save your child's smile.
