Saying goodbye to a loved one is never easy, but writing them a loving and respectful obituary is a way to honor their life and invite others to do the same. Many people have trouble deciding how to begin writing these messages and what to include. To help you during this difficult time, here are a few pieces of information to consider including.

How to Write an Obituary

1. Announcement

First, announce the passing of the deceased. State their full name, age, and date and place of birth and death. Some people choose to include brief biographical statements, such as "loving mother and grandmother" or "longtime local veterinarian," but this is a matter of personal preference.

Historically, obituaries disclosed causes of death, but this has become less common in recent years. Again, it's a matter of personal preference. If the death is related to a health condition, such as cancer, including the cause is a way to raise awareness.

2. Biography

Write a biographical overview of your loved one’s life and accomplishments. Common facts include education, marriage and family details, work history, honors and points of pride, and hobbies and interests.

Aim for conciseness, as space limitations in print may make it difficult to write an in-depth biography. Don't hesitate to make the bio personal. Include the personality and character of the deceased to tailor it to your loved one. At the end of the biography, list immediate surviving family members, such as siblings and children.

3. Service Information

obituariesIf you’re planning a funeral or memorial service for your loved one, invite others to participate. Include the date, time, and location of the service and, if it’s a cremation, the inurnment.

If you have specific requests for flowers or donations, this is also the place to mention them. Many people include mailing addresses where people who knew the deceased can send condolences to the grieving family.
