The fuel pump is a crucial component of most engines. It is responsible for carrying fuel from the gas tank to the engine with the required amount of pressure. When a fuel pump breaks down, the engine won't have access to gas, and performance issues will result. The below problems are red flags that you need auto repairs, and likely a new pump.

When to Replace a Fuel Pump

1. A Sputtering Engine

A faulty fuel pump cannot supply a consistent stream of gas at the appropriate levels of pressure. As a result, the engine will struggle, especially when trying to speed up. The next time you're trying to accelerate, listen for sounds of sputtering. This is a telltale indicator that the engine isn't receiving enough fuel, and a broken pump is likely the cause.

2. A Whining Noise

auto repairWhen a fuel pump wears down, gets a dent, or suffers a puncture, air can pass through it with an audible strain. The change in airflow will create a whining noise from the gas tank. In some cases, the noise may sound more like a howl than a whine. These can also be signs of low fuel levels or contaminants in the pump, but you should have an auto repair professional check to be sure.

3. Trouble Starting the Car

Every time you turn the key in the ignition, it triggers the fuel pump. Damage can wear down the pump and reduce the pressure it produces. Without this, adequate fuel can't reach the engine. If you're encountering routine issues with starting your car, or it takes multiple turns of the key, the fuel pump might need replacing.
