One of the most important aspects of preparing for your move is receiving an accurate estimate from a reputable mover.  You should expect the mover you contact to require a physical survey.  If they do not want to do so then scratch them off your list!  An accurate estimate benefits both you and the mover.

  1. Decide what is to move and what will be donated or disposed of.
  2. Will you do the packing or would you like the movers to pack?
  3. Make sure to show the move coordinator the closets, cupboards, garage, sheds, attic and patio areas.  Be prepared to go to the self-storage unit if you have one.  Do not rely on memory!
  4. Allow the estimator the time they need in each room.  Make sure you have allowed approximately one hour per appointment.  Rushing thru the process and not answering questions may compromise the move process and result in an inaccurate estimate.
  5. Has your home been remodeled or modified since you moved in?  That sofa or bookcase was not a problem when you moved in but changes to walls/stairwells may now prohibit it from coming out.
  6. Are appliances moving or staying?  Are you prepared to service appliances, exercise/entertainment equipment or do you need a quote to do so?  Proper servicing prior to moving is essential.
  7. Compare apples to apples once you have your estimates.  Make sure each line item is included and transparent.  Look at the weight estimates; they should be close from company to company.  If one estimate seems too good to be true chances are it is!
  8. You should expect and receive an official written estimate.  Interstate and local movers are required to provide estimates in an approved format.
  9. Beware of brokers!  Their website will have the same look as an accredited van line.  They will ask for a deposit which should never happen.  Their pricing will be drastically less than an actual moving company because they have no resources to do your move.  They are not able to do an in home estimate.
  10. Check out moving companies on American Moving & Storage Associations website to be sure your mover is licensed and insured.  They have a lot of valuable information.  www.moving.org
