When the weather cools down, and you're no longer using your boat for the season, putting it in storage under a cover will help keep it safe until you're ready to take it out again. Before any vehicle goes into long term storage, it needs maintenance to keep it in prime condition while it's not in use. Below, learn what steps to take to get your boat ready for the winter.

How to Prep a Boat for Self-Storage

1. Check the Fluids

Having water or debris in your oil reservoir encourages corrosion and buildup. You should drain it, change the filter, and add fresh oil right before putting the boat into storage. You should also make sure that the boat has a full tank of gas. If there's empty space in the tank, condensation becomes a problem. Add antifreeze to the engine to protect it over the winter.

2. Clean, Dry, & Wax

StorageAny dirt or grime will make corrosion, rust, and stains more likely, so clean the boat thoroughly inside and out. Let it dry, or wipe down any areas where rust and water spots might be an issue. Apply a fresh coat of wax to the hull. This will protect it in storage and ensure it's ready to hit the water quickly when the weather gets warmer.

3. Remove Parts

Some boat parts can wear out if you leave them in place while the boat is in storage. Take out the drive belts to keep them from stretching and cracking over the winter. Also, remove the battery to keep it from draining. Ideally, you should keep it hooked to a charger until you're ready to go on the water again.
