If you want to carry a concealed weapon, you need to attend classes. CCW classes help you use your gun correctly and safely to avoid accidents and injuries. Here, learn how to prepare for CCW class as part of your ongoing education on responsible gun ownership.

4 Ways to Prepare for Concealed Carry Class

1. Obtain a License

Never arrive at CCW class without a license to operate a gun. If you live in Illinois, for example, you must have a Firearm Owners Identification Card (FOID) and an Illinois Concealed Carry License to own a firearm and ammunition, and carry your gun, respectively. It can take a few weeks to obtain your license, so schedule CCW classes accordingly.

2. Familiarize Yourself With the Type of Gun You’re Using

Learn everything you can about your specific gun type. Practice loading ammunition and the magazine clip several times, as well as how to remove the clip once the rounds have been used.

Also, schedule time at the local shooting range, so you have a working knowledge of how your gun fires. Adjust your shooting stance as needed while also practicing gun safety, such as never pointing it at anyone when you’re at a range and the weapon is loaded.

3. Bring Spare Parts & Backup Gear

CCW classesReview the list provided by your CCW instructor so you bring everything you’re supposed to, including spare gun parts, such as trigger and recoil springs, a hat to shield your eyes from the sun during shooting practice, knee pads to shoot from different heights, and holsters. You may also want to bring a backup gun you are already familiar with in case something goes wrong with your current weapon.

4. Find Out Whether to Bring Your Gun to Class

Find out whether you are supposed to bring your weapon into the classroom or leave it locked in your car for shooting practice use only. Most instructors don’t want weapons in the class, so place yours in a locked gun case before leaving it in your car. If you can bring your gun to class, expect CCW class staff to check it for ammunition before the instruction starts.
