Bracelets are a staple piece of any jewelry collection. Yet, to achieve that magazine-worthy, put-together finish, you need to choose the right size for your wrist and style. Whether you're buying for a big event or for everyday wear, follow this guide to ensure a proper fit.

How to Measure Correctly

Similar to a watch, the easiest way to determine your bracelet size is by simply measuring your wrist. For this process, utilize a fabric or paper measuring tape that offers flexibility for easy and accurate movement. If that's unavailable, use a piece of string to wrap around your arm and lay it on a standard ruler or stiff measuring tape to figure out the necessary width.

To make the buying process easier, you need to complete two calculations. First, determine the circumference around your arm by measuring directly above the wrist bone. Add ¼ to 1 inch to that number depending on how loose or tight you prefer your bracelets, which is usually ½ inch. Secondly, calculate the diameter by dividing the circumference by 3.14 or folding the measuring tape in half. While most bracelets provide circumference measurement, some styles, like bangles, are listed by dimension.

How to Determine Fit

braceletAlong with knowing your measurements, you also need to consider the placement of the piece. Ideally, the links should rest right around the wrist with room to fit a finger in-between to ensure a secure yet comfortable fit. Yet, some variations, like charm bracelets, are usually worn further down on the hand. For such instances, you may need to add another ½ or 1 inch to the circumference.

Cuffs are typically worn on the forearm, but they're easily adjustable with some slight pressure. As such, purchase based on your wrist size and adjust as needed. Fixed bangles are one of the most challenging pieces of jewelry because they're not modifiable. If the fit is too loose, then you risk it falling off and losing it. However, when it's too tight, it's a struggle and often painful to get the piece on. For optimal comfort, follow the same sentiment as charm bracelets for that slightly loose fit.
