5 Tips for Maintaining Your Furnace, Woodland Park, New Jersey

A home’s furnace is designed to maintain warm indoor temperatures throughout the winter. However, through regular usage of your central heating system, parts of the furnace can fail and result in expensive heating system repairs. Luckily, there are some simple maintenance tasks that will keep your furnace operating as efficiently as possible.

How to Properly Maintain Your Furnace

1. Regular Cleanings

Cleaning out the dust, dirt, and debris that accumulates inside the furnace is an easy way to prevent the need for heating system repairs. Open up the access panels and use a vacuum or compressed air to remove unwanted debris. You should also use a soft brush to wipe off the mechanical parts inside of the blower compartment.

2. Replace Air Filters

Your heating system uses these filters to protect the indoor air quality by capturing any dust, dirt, and allergens in your ductwork. Over time, the ducts become clogged by the contaminants. If they aren’t replaced, the furnace will operate less efficiently and is more likely to break down and require heating system repair. Heating contractors recommend doing this at least every 90 days, but if you have pets or people with allergy symptoms, it should be done every month or two.

3. Keep the Drainage Tube Clear

As part of the heating process, the furnace produces water that drains from the power exhaust manifold into a drip pan shared with your air conditioning unit. When the drainage tube becomes clogged, the water floods into the manifold and triggers the flame sensor, shutting down the entire system. Avoid this by removing the tube from the manifold and using compressed air or a cleaning solution to eliminate the debris.

4. Insulate the House

Heating InstallationIf the home is poorly insulated, it allows the warm air generated by the furnace to escape. This forces the furnace to work harder than it should, which makes the need for heating system repairs more likely. Apply weather stripping to windows, make sure the seals around doors are secure, and add extra insulation to the attic to trap the heat inside and make the system more efficient.

5. Check the Carbon Monoxide Detector

Since the combustion process used to generate heat also creates carbon monoxide, you need to keep tabs on its level. Carbon monoxide is a deadly gas when inhaled and has no taste or odor, so the detector is your first line of defense against poisoning. Press the test button on your detector and replace the batteries if it’s not working.
