Water softeners are a necessary fixture when you have hard water on your property. These devices ensure that unsightly mineral deposits do not degrade plumbing parts and interfere with laundry and bathing. However, water softeners can face problems, and below are a few to know.

Common Trouble With Water Softeners

1. Salt Buildup

Sometimes a crust develops that inhibits water flow. Known as a salt bridge, this material often occurs when humidity levels are too high, or there is too much salt in the softener. Because of the high concentration, the equipment can’t use the salt to soften the water. Some people try to break apart bridges themselves, but calling a plumber will prevent damage to your device.

2. Dirty Filter

Filters catch large minerals at the start of the softening process, which means filters will eventually clog. Because of this, you should change your filters every three months or so if you notice a change in your water supply.

3. Problematic Resin Beads

Most resin beads will last as long as the water softener, but sometimes they fail earlier. You will know they are malfunctioning if you see them floating in the softener’s water.

4. Brine Line Issues

The brine line is the tube that runs from the tank to the softener’s control valve. If the device is too full and spills into the brine tank, you may need to inspect the line to ensure it is correctly attached to the float inside the well. Salt can also cause clogs in the container and stop water flowing into the tank. Any defects in the line can have the same adverse effects.

5. Broken Motor

A less common, but still possible problem, is a failing motor. Like any machine, motors can fail due to wear and tear over time. The best defense is to have regular maintenance on your softener, which means keeping it clean and inspecting components before complete failure. Odd sounds or a struggling system are signs of trouble.
