When it comes to cooling and heating your facility or industrial equipment, there are two types of water treatment systems that can be used—an open loop or closed loop. The one you choose will depend on the specific needs of the application, but closed loop treatments are a common solution in many situations. The guide below explains how they work.

What Are They?

To heat or cool a facility, closed loop water treatment systems recirculate the same water over and over again through enclosed pipes. This keeps it from being directly exposed to air.

For the inside temperature of a building to drop, the water inside the pipes are cooled along with a refrigerant. The water is transferred to a chiller where the refrigerant absorbs the heat before the water moves back into the building and provides cool air.

The heated refrigerant gets transferred to the cooling tower where the warmth is released. This process is reversed when warming up a building.

Benefits water treatment systems

One of the biggest advantages of closed loop systems is that they have a reduced risk of water contamination. This can help extend the life of the system. Utilizing this method also allows facilities to minimize energy and water costs.

They tend to be a more efficient choice than open loop systems because they don’t freeze during the winter months and aren’t subject to evaporation. Another advantage is that they save space since they don’t use a separate heat exchanger.

Maintenance Requirements

Though they don’t require as much maintenance as open loop systems, closed loop designs still need to be properly taken care of. Leaks in the system can introduce oxygen and lead to corrosion. This will restrict water flow, block pipes, decrease the system’s efficiency, and damage the circulation pumps. Regular water treatment can help prevent these problems from occurring.
