Kids need a break from classwork from time to time, and summer break offers the ultimate recess. Kids need at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day, though, or it will negatively impact them physically and, in turn, academically when fall rolls around. This summer, break out your sports equipment and consider these five ways that you can promote active bodies and minds during summer vacation.

A Guide to Keeping Kids Active in the Summer

1. Baseball

Summer is a great time to get involved in your local youth baseball leagues. Whether they’re young enough to be in tee-ball or old enough to play with a live pitcher, baseball teaches teamwork and offers a couple of hours of physical activity daily. Even better, the only sports equipment they’ll need to get started in most leagues is a glove of their own. 

2. Flag Football

Flag football is a popular alternative to full-contact football. While school football seasons run through the fall, winter, and spring, you can find community-based programs and camps that are supervised throughout the summer. Also, consider taking your kids and their friends to play a pickup game at one of your local parks.

3. Basketball

As long as you have a basketball, there are courts you can play on in most public parks. It’s also reasonably easy to set up a goal at home, especially if you have a concrete driveway.

4. Soccer

Yet another popular sport with kids that only requires a ball to play, soccer is a great summer activity for any kid. Your kids don’t even need a specialized field to play, as long as there’s enough space to run and kick the ball around in your backyard or at a local park. 

5. Running

Whether it’s track and field competitions, cross country racing, or just doing laps around the block, running is an excellent way for both you and your kids to get some exercise this summer. While there are no sports equipment requirements for establishing a running regimen, it is a good idea to look into moisture-wicking clothing that won’t cause chafing.
