Flossing is essential to your daily hygiene routine. Little slip-ups and mistakes will lessen its effectiveness, so practice proper oral care every time you clean your teeth. Here are some common flossing mistakes to avoid and help you get praise during your next checkup with your dentist.

Easy Flossing Mistakes to Avoid

1. Move Too Quickly

Slow down and make sure you’re properly cleaning between your teeth. Neglecting the in-betweens of each tooth means you’re leaving harmful bacteria and plaque that cause cavities and decay. Diligently floss each side of your teeth to remove any harmful elements and prevent oral health complications.

2. Skip Brushing and Mouthwash

Although flossing is the most efFlossing before the dentistfective at removing tartar and debris from your teeth, don’t forget to use your toothbrush and mouthwash too! Brushing your teeth scrapes superficial plaque and tartar off the enamel’s surface and dislodges debris from the gums, while mouthwash sterilizes your mouth. It’s important to maintain each of these habits to prevent bacteria and plaque buildup that lead to tooth decay, gum disease, and cavities.

3. Floss Too Frequently

Flossing too frequently causes just as much harm as never doing so. Using floss more than once a day will result in irritated and damaged gum tissue. However, do not forgo this cleaning procedure altogether when you experience a minimal amount of bleeding. This is a completely normal reaction when you haven’t flossed consistently, and will stop after one or two nights. Clean your teeth properly without harming your gums by flossing once a day, preferably before bed to avoid having debris in your teeth overnight.
