After a winter spent cozying up indoors, you and your family are finally preparing to take another RV trip. However, before you can set out on the open road, ensure your vehicle is up to the challenge. Use the following checklist to get ready, and stock up on RV essentials at your local home and garden store.

How to Get Your RV Ready to Roll

1. Flush the Water System

During the winter, most RV owners add antifreeze to their water reservoirs. Now that you’re preparing for spring, turn on the water pump and faucets to allow the chemical-tainted water to run through. While it does this, flush the toilet several times. As soon as you can no longer see the bright hue of the antifreeze, turn off the pump and faucets and replace your filter cartridges.

2. Test Gas Appliances

Start by turning on the propane tank and testing the burners, then try the fridge, furnace, water heater, and other gas appliances. Finally, have your propane tanks topped off at your local home and garden store so you’re ready for those long road trips.

3. Inspect Tires

The cold weather can do a number on tires, causing them to lose air pressure so they become weak or even flat. Not only does a vehicle as massive as an RV need all the support it can get, but underinflated tires can also increase your risk of skidding and getting into an accident.

Refill your tires to the manufacturer-recommended PSI found in the vehicle’s owner manual. While you’re at it, check the tread for tears, cracks, or uneven wear. If you notice any of these signs of damage, have the set replaced before heading out on the road.
