There is no single toothbrush or toothpaste that is considered the best. They all have their advantages that will benefit your oral health. What makes a difference is the teeth cleaning technique you use to brush your teeth. There are several techniques available, as well as strategies to preserve your smile and ensure your teeth stay white.

What are the Proper Brushing Techniques?

The Bass/Sulcular Technique

Tilt your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle and use gentle pressure to brush beneath the gumline. Brush one area in a circular motion for 15 to 20 seconds before moving to the next section. Only cover two to three teeth at once.

After you've finished with the outside surface, brush the inside surface. Do this by holding the toothbrush vertically and brushing beneath the gumline.

Then, brush the chewing surfaces of your teeth before lightly brushing your tongue as well.

The Stillman Technique

The Charter Technique

The Charter technique is primarily recommended for those with spaces between their teeth, have experienced gum recession, or have had periodontal surgery. It's also often used by those with partial dentures.

Again, tilt the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle, but focus on the chewing surface of your teeth for 15 to 20 seconds. Instead of using a circular motion, brush back and forth before moving on to the rest of the surfaces of your teeth.

Are There Other Strategies for Better Oral Hygiene?

Always use a soft-bristled brush during your twice-daily cleanings. Remember to replace the brush every three to four months, since the brushes will fray over time. Frayed brushes don't clean systematically, allowing food particles and debris to remain stuck between your teeth.

When brushing, always use fluoride toothpaste.

Before or after brushing, flossing will remove plaque and bacteria between your teeth that even your toothbrush can't reach.

Avoid sugary foods, which feed bacteria in the mouth and wear down the teeth.

Maintain twice-annual cleanings with your dentist, who will ensure your oral health.
