The beginning of a new season leads to a change in indoor air temperature needs. Before switching on your cool air, take the time to give your HVAC a thorough inspection and cleaning. It has been months since you used the “COOL” air setting, and you may need to provide it with a little TLC before putting it to use.

Spring HVAC Maintenance

1. Change the Air Filter

Maintaining a clean filtration system predicates its effective air quality and efficiency. Try to change your filter every 30 to 90 days. If you wait too long between filter changes, the unit must work much harder to pump air into your home. This puts extra stress on the system and leads to higher energy costs for you and dirty indoor air for your home.

2. Check the Condensate Pipe

Ensure that the condensate pipe remains connected to a drain. If it does not, the area around your HVAC may flood when the system drips water after its cooling cycle. Also, inspect the pipe for algae growth which can sometimes inhabit moist areas. The algae can constrict the pipe, forcing the water to return into the system and cause mechanical damage.

3. Check the Thermostat

The transition of seasons also calls for a change in indoor temperature. You most likely used your HVAC for heating purposes during the winter season and will begin switching over to the system’s cooling option soon. Be sure to change the thermostat to “COOL” and open all vents so that you feel the refreshing air circulating throughout your home.

4. Clean Around the Unit

Your HVAC calls for spring cleaning just as much as your home and garden. If the unit is inside your home, organize the area surrounding it so that it has at least 2 feet of clear space around it. If it is outside, rake away leaves, branches, or debris and cut back overgrown foliage. A clear area will promote airflow and prevent overheating. Try not to plant anything around the system as plants may grow too close to the unit.

5. Schedule a Spring Tune-Up

It’s important to have someone inspect your HVAC system two times each year. Spring is the perfect time to do so. Technicians can elongate the system’s lifespan with a few tune-ups and repairs. They also can help you replace it if necessary.
