A deck is a stunning, functional home addition. Over time, it endures a lot of stress. Whether it’s three feet from the ground or extends from a second story, you want to ensure it’s strong. Below are important safety checks to perform on a structure that’s a few years old to determine whether you need new installations.

Where to Check to Ensure Your Deck Is Safe

1. Flashing

Flashing is a metal router installed between your home exterior and the deck. It’s responsible for flushing water toward a downspout to direct it to the yard or a drain. Damaged flashing will let water build up, which can lead to wood rot. Fasteners, including nails, could also become brittle.

Check the metal strip for cracks, dents, and other damage. Look again following rainfall, and have it replaced if it’s allowing water to pool.

2. Wood

Looking for split or rotting wood is one of the most important safety checks. Damaged wood won’t hold your deck together, potentially resulting in tilting, weak spots, and collapse.

You’ll need to have these boards or planks replaced and sealed with water-resistant products to prevent future rot.

3. Concrete Foundation

Worn post foundations can also cause problems.

Check the exposed material around the support posts. If the concrete is flaking, eroded, or cracked, you’ll need to have the foundation reinforced with more product. It’s a good idea to keep guests and family members off the deck until then, as too much pressure in the wrong direction could push posts loose and lead to collapse.

4. Connections

You may need to reinforce your structure if nails, fasteners, screws, and other hardware corrode.

Test the banisters, steps, and handrails by applying light pressure in one direction. If they hold strong, there’s nothing to worry about. Those that wobble will need new hardware. If you notice rust around existing hardware, remove the pieces so the corrosion doesn’t spread and get them replaced.
