When the weekend arrives it can kick our brains in to a different gear, one without structure and indulgences. It can be important to take a little breather from the weekly routine but establishing healthy boundaries will be important to prevent a weight loss plateau. Learn how to kick back on the weekend without falling off the wagon.

  1. Start with a healthy breakfast – Yes, just like the week this part of your routine should be consistent. Perhaps change it up from a quick meal replacement shake that you consume during the week to a vegetable omelette with whole wheat toast and a side of berries to start your Saturday. Starting your weekend with a meal you truly enjoy will help keep you from feeling deprived as the weekend progresses.
  2. Get a workout in early Saturday. A morning workout is a great way to set your brain straight for the weekend. Even if it’s a different type of workout than your regular weekly routine, just get moving and by doing so you are reminding yourself of your goals and why you are wanting to continue to lose weight. This is a great time to take in nature or listen to your favorite music or podcast. Make this weekend workout more like a treat for yourself.
  3. Eat before eating out. Going out to eat on the weekends can be really enjoyable and can be a great way to unwind. Try to eat something about 15 minutes before you head out. This can be a piece of fruit, a small handful of nuts, a string cheese. Choose something healthy that is under 150 calories and will take the edge off once you arrive at the restaurant.
  4. Find a way to indulge healthfully. This can be one glass of your favorite red wine or a few bites of small dessert split between friends.  This little way to let loose helps keep you going when the work week arrives. Be careful to not over do it though, alcohol calories can add up quickly and may alter your original plan for the evening.
  5. Order in a healthy option instead of dining out.  If you want to take a break from cooking on the weekend, ordering in is a treat and can be done while still keeping calories in check.  There are many restaurants that will deliver right to your home and then it’s up to you to choose a healthy menu item.  Chicken kebobs and roasted Brussels sprouts is a delicious choice. A salad with grilled salmon and dressing on the side or even just a favorite soup from a local establishment.

You can eat some of your favorite foods while still losing weight. It’s about making your weekend balanced in all the right ways.  For more information on safe, effective weight loss programs visit WeightLossNebraska.com.
