Are weeds getting in the way of the smooth driveway laid by your paving contractor? Cracks in your driveway retain a surprising amount of organic matter, heat, and moisture, thus creating the perfect environment for weeds to thrive. Follow the tips below to get the flawless and weed-free driveway you desire.

3 Tips for Preventing Weeds From Growing in Your Driveway Material

1. Pull Them Out

It might seem outdated, but pulling weeds out yourself by hand is the cheapest and most straightforward way to rid your driveway of weeds. Be sure to pull them out at the root so that they don’t return. This method is particularly effective for weeds with taproots like dandelions. To ensure you pull the weed out effectively, make sure the soil is thoroughly moisturized and pull steadily and slowly.

2. Weed Killer

Extreme heat will kill the weed all the way down to its root. You can also make your own weed-killing concoction with simple ingredients. Use 1-quart vinegar, ¼ cup salt, and two tablespoons dishwashing detergent. Spray the mixture on the weeds and wait to see if you need another coat.

If you prefer to purchase a weed killer, look for one that contains glyphosate. Glyphosate is less toxic than other chemicals used in weed killers. It does not linger in the soil and is thus less likely to affect animals and plant tissue. However, remember it’s a chemical and should be treated as such.

3. Seal Cracks

Weeds won't grow in your driveway if there aren’t cracks for seeds to enter and then sprout through. Inspect your driveway a few times a year, especially after a hard winter, and look for signs of damage. Contact a paving contractor for repairs to ensure it comes out looking smooth and professional. Sealing cracks will not only smother existing weeds but prevent more from growing in the future.
