There’s a lot more to apartment moving than simply packing your things and calling a moving company. In fact, there’s so much more that keeping up with everything you have to do can get confusing. To make things easier, here’s a quick guide answering some of the more common questions people have when moving out of their apartments.

A Brief Guide to Apartment Moving

Do I have to give my landlord notice?

Most apartment leases stipulate that you must give the landlord written notice before vacating the premises. It could be necessary for you to give notice anywhere from 7-90 days before you move, depending on the contents of your lease. It’s important to do this on time because failing to do so can mean that you’ll be liable for additional payments. It can also result in your lease being automatically renewed.

Read the early termination clause in your lease carefully. Most will require that the apartment is clean and free of damage in order for a tenant to receive their security deposit back. So before you move out, make sure you’re in compliance by cleaning the apartment from top to bottom by wiping, sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming. Also make sure to use putty and paint to patch up any holes you may have hammered into the walls for decorations, pictures, or curtains.

When should I change my address?

Change your address at least a week before you move. This will ensure that your mail doesn’t get lost. Remember to not only change your U.S. Postal Service mailing address but also the addresses on your car registration, driver’s license, banks, and credit cards.

When should I transfer my utilities?

Contact your utility service providers at least a week before you move and inform them of the date that you’re planning on moving out. If possible, arrange for utilities to be shut off in your current apartment the day after you leave it. At the same time, request that they are turned on in your new apartment a day or two before you arrive. This will help ensure a smooth process.
