An office job can put a surprising amount of strain on your eyes. Looking at a bright screen for eight hours a day can tire and even strain your eyes, causing vision issues and headaches. To avoid these problems and keep your vision at its best, follow these eye care guidelines.

How to Care for Your Eyes at the Office

1. Adjust the Lighting

An office space that's either too bright or dim makes your eyes work harder. Adjust the bulbs and light fixtures in the room until the lighting feels comfortable. Also, adjust the screen brightness and blue light presence, so you can read it without effort and don't have to squint, which will fatigue your eyes. Move the screen and light sources so that there’s no glare when you sit at your desk.

2. Wear Vision Correction

Eye CareIf you've been prescribed eyeglasses or contact lenses for reading and other up-close activities, wear them while you work. Leaving the glasses at home means your eyes have to work much harder to focus, causing eye strain.

3. Rest Your Eyes

The lenses inside your eyes flex to focus on objects at different distances. Looking away from the screen and focusing on something much further away allows your eyes to relax. Follow the 20-20-20 rule—every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Also, blink every three to four seconds while you’re focused on the computer to keep your eyes from drying out.
