When the time comes to remove that stump in your yard, you may want to consider stump grinding rather than full removal. This service is more affordable and less invasive to your yard than a traditional tree stump removal. Below, learn what to expect from this tree service to decide whether it’s right for you.

What Is the Stump Grinding Process?

During this service, the tree company uses a heavy piece of machinery called a stump grinder. The grinder is equipped with a steel cutting wheel at the end of a hydraulic arm, which spins very quickly. This cuts through the wood in the stump, grinding it down into mulch. They will grind it down about four to six inches below ground level, to target the entire stump and the surface roots. In some cases, the tree may send up a new growth from the roots that are left underground.

When Is It Necessary?

high point stump grindingYou should always choose grinding over leaving a stump in the yard. When it’s left to decompose on its own, it will become an attractant to insects. It may fuel fungal growth, which can harm the rest of your landscaping. Stumps are also eyesores and possible hazards for running children, pets, and lawnmowers.

The grinding process leaves a mulch behind, which serves as valuable nutrient-dense food for new growth. Many people choose to lay sod or plant a flower bed above where the stump used to be. It’s not recommended that you plant a new tree where the stump was. There will still be a lot of roots below ground, which can interfere with the new stump growth.
