When roads are slick with spring rains, tires can lose their traction on the asphalt. If you turn or brake too quickly, your car might spin out, putting your safety at risk. By following the tips below and being proactive with auto care, you’ll know the steps to take to gain control of the situation and reach a complete stop.

What to Do When You Spin Out

1. Remove Your Foot

You’ll need to naturally slow down your vehicle to regain control, so it’s important to take your foot off both the accelerator and the brake.

Being in drive still sends power to the wheels, so shift into neutral when you’re comfortable enough to do so.

2. Steer Carefully

Then, gently steer to the same side the back of the vehicle is sliding towards. This is known as “steering into the skid.” As you slow down and regain control, straighten the wheel. You can then turn back onto the road once your car is under control and the road is clear.

3. Schedule Car Maintenance

Being proactive with your auto care will help your vehicle maintain its traction on slick roads. The tread on your tires should be routinely checked to ensure they don’t reach a depth of less than 2/32 inches.

If your tires are wearing low, it’s best to have them replaced by a professional as soon as possible. Schedule to have your brakes inspected as well; if one side is more worn than the other or is damaged, the car is more likely to spin out.
