Funeral services are a time for friends and family to gather and pay their respects to a loved one who has died. While the service should be personalized to the deceased, there are elements that are common. Here are several to consider as you make funeral arrangements.

4 Elements of a Funeral

1. Visitation/Viewing

Before the actual funeral, there is usually a visitation or viewing. Viewings can last one to two days or happen right before the funeral services begin. Most visitations occur at the funeral home, but some people have them in their houses. It’s a time for family and friends to gather, give condolences, and view the deceased one last time. Photos, music, and a few words by a religious leader or family member can also be incorporated.

2. Funeral

funeral servicesThe funeral is the ceremony that occurs before the deceased is laid to rest. It is typically held in a church or another religious building, or it can be at another appropriate venue, such as a funeral home, chapel, or crematorium.

During the funeral, there are usually readings and music selected to honor the lost loved one. A eulogy is delivered by the officiant, a clergy member, or someone close to the deceased. This speech should give a glimpse into who the person was and can include treasured memories. You could also include photos or a video during the service.

3. Burial

Also called a committal service, this is where the remains are placed in their final resting place. It can be at their graveside or in a chapel near their burial spot. If cremation was selected, it can be done at the crematorium, funeral home, or columbarium where an urn will be placed. Usually, a prayer or reading is included.

4. Reception

After the services are complete, many families will hold a reception. It often takes place at a casual spot, like a home, where family and friends gather to share memories and give support. Some choose to have it in a restaurant with a full meal while others have it in a reception room at the funeral home. Catering just light snacks are often served.
