Most dental procedures can be scheduled at your convenience; however, if you can’t even wait a day or two to visit the dentist, it’s generally considered a dental emergency. While these situations can often be prevented via home care and regular checkups, accidents can happen to anyone. Here are a few signs you should visit a dental practice right away.

When Should You Call a Dentist Right Away?

1. Unbearable Pain

Even a mild toothache is a serious dental concern, but it can usually wait a day or two, if necessary.

However, if you ever feel a toothache that won’t subside with over-the-counter medications, or if you can’t sleep because of it, it’s time to call a dentist.

2. Swelling

dentistIf you notice swelling in your mouth, you may have an infection or are reacting to a foreign object. Immediately call your dentist and discuss any products you’ve recently used and may be allergic to.

Look for a pimple-like bump on your gums; this is a sign of an abscess. It may not appear large or feel tender if it’s self-draining, but it can be a sign of tooth failure or a major bone infection, so don’t wait to get an X-ray.

3. Risk of Irreversible Damage

If you ever have an entire tooth—including the crown and roots—knocked out, gently wrap it in a wet paper cloth and bring it to the dentist immediately. There may be an option to reinsert and attach the tooth—but only if you get to the dentist quickly.

For fractured teeth or fillings, the urgency depends on the extent and location of the fracture. If it extends below the gum line, getting immediate treatment will improve your chances of salvaging the tooth. Otherwise, a dental implant may be your only option.

4. Cosmetic Urgency

Most broken and missing fillings or chipped teeth aren’t true dental emergencies; however, they can feel like it right before a vacation or picture day. If you have a visible tooth that needs immediate attention, explain the situation to your dentist, and see if they can squeeze you onto their schedule.
