COPD refers to multiple chronic, progressive diseases that make it hard to breathe, like emphysema. Coughing and wheezing are common, and symptoms tend to worsen with time. Exposure to harmful inhalants typically causes the condition. Thankfully, it can be avoided and treated with proper medical attention and awareness.

Causes

Smoking is the top cause of COPD, as it harms the delicate lining of the lungs. Secondhand smoke is equally harmful.

Up to 25% of people with COPD have never smoked, but contract the illness from long-term exposure to lung irritants like smog, chemical fumes, and dust. Asthma has also been known to contribute to the disease. It’s also believed that some people may be genetically predisposed to the condition, though more research is needed.

Symptoms

In its earliest stages, COPD shows the following signs:

  • Intermittent shortness of breath after exercise
  • Recurrent cough
  • Phlegm in the throat
  • Need to frequently clear the throat

As the condition progresses, additional symptoms may manifest:

  • Wheezy exhalations
  • Tight chest
  • Chronic cough
  • Phlegm in the respiratory system
  • Low energy
  • Frequent respiratory infections
  • Fatigue
  • Weight loss

copdAcute signs of the condition include an inability to speak due to shortness of breath, blue-tinged skin that indicates low oxygen levels, disorientation, and a speeding heartbeat. If these symptoms arise, seek emergency medical attention immediately.

Treatment

As of yet, there’s no cure, but there are many effective treatments available that slow the condition’s course, relieve symptoms, and improve quality of life. Bronchiodilator inhalers relax the airways in the lungs, making it easier to breathe. Oxygen therapy can be used.

In some cases, doctors may recommend surgery. A procedure called a bullectomy removes abnormal air spaces from the lungs, while a volume reduction surgery removes damaged upper lung tissue.

Lastly, anyone living with COPD should stop smoking if they haven’t already. A healthy diet, adequate sleep, and exercise as recommended by a doctor should be incorporated for optimal health. Keeping up with seasonal vaccinations is also important.
