If your basement leaks when it rains, you should expect some form of water damage to develop. Taking steps to prevent leaks begins with foundation repairs. However,  if you experience flooding before that, here’s what you need to do to manage the problem and limit the harm.

How to Deal With a Rain-Flooded Basement

1. Take Safety Precautions

Only begin assessing the condition of your basement once the rain passes. Access the breaker box, and turn off the power supply to the basement. Dressed appropriately. Wear work gloves and boots or waders if the water is deep.

2. Check the Sump Pump

If you have a sump pump, it should pump water away from your home’s foundation.  A pump may fail, however, if the rainfall is heavy or if the power goes out. To avoid future sump pump failures, have an electrician assess the pump’s power source. They can install a backup battery to keep the pump running if you lose power and repair or replace the motor as needed. You may also need to hire a plumber to assess the outlet pipe and drainage system.

3. Begin Removing Water

4. Remove Soggy Property

Move waterlogged objects to a dry zone that’s properly ventilated. Your basement may remain damp even after you mop the floors, so move them to another space entirely. It can take several days for some objects to dry out. Dispose of anything that doesn’t completely dry.

5. Ventilate the Space

Open doors and windows and use fans to get the air in your basement circulating. A portable dehumidifier can also help, but address the root cause of your wetness problems by having a foundation repair technician determine an effective and permanent solution for your home.
