If you're considering upgrading your exterior with garden hardscaping or driveway replacement, you've probably come across the term concrete flatwork—a type of concrete work all around you. Learning more about the process and what projects use flatwork will help inform your decisions. Below are four frequently asked questions about it.

Understanding Concrete Flatwork

What is it?

Concrete flatwork, as the name suggests, is the process of pouring concrete to create a flat surface. Flat concrete work is frequently seen outdoors. Concrete floors in garages and basements are flatwork as are concrete patios, sidewalks, driveways, dumpster pads, and garden paths.

How is it done?

The process starts with wooden framing and the formation of a subbase.

The frame gives the poured concrete its shape and ensures straight edges, an even pour, and faster drying. A subbase of either rock aggregate or rebar underlays the poured surface to strengthen the concrete and limit the formation of cracks.

Why use it?

Poured concrete creates a flat, smooth surface that can be reinforced with steel rods or mesh to withstand heavy loads and prevent cracks, preserving the integrity and appearance of the surface.

Does it crack?

Concrete shrinks and compresses as it sets, but contractors take precautions to control cracking that may result from these stresses by reinforcing it with stabilizing rebar, for example. In addition, concrete is poured in sections. Expansion joints at regular intervals between slabs relieve the stress caused by thermal expansion and contraction as temperatures heat up and cool down. Speak with your contractor about other actions they take to guard against cracking.
