Adding a flower bed or two to your landscape is a great way to breathe new life into your outdoor space. Vibrant colors and beautiful flowers from the garden center can liven up the entire home, providing eye-catching contrast and enhancing your curb appeal. Below are a few creative suggestions to consider implementing into your flowerbeds.

3 Flower Bed Suggestions for the Yard

1. Fill a Hollow Log

Logs of any size can serve as makeshift planters. Whether you have some additional firewood cut for winter or something larger after removing a tree, you can make surprisingly great use of it, but you should just make sure that the wood is hard enough. Someone handy with a chainsaw can create a sufficient opening, remove the wood, and produce draining slits at the bottom. Then fill the structure with soil and some slow-release fertilizer, and finish with some of your favorite flowers from the garden center. It can serve as a brilliant accent piece for the front of the home.

2. Try Some Pea Gravel

Mulch is commonly applied to flower beds to improve their appearance and create a contrast that allows the blossoms to stand out. But another option that’s just as striking and a bit more unique is pea gravel. This cost-effective material prevents erosion and weed growth while improving drainage conditions. Since the stones tend to hold on to heat, ask someone at the garden center about the most heat-friendly flowers available, as they’ll generally thrive best. You’ll need to layer a sheet of landscape fabric over topsoil, then cut into the fabric and plant your flowers. Finish up by laying the pea gravel out evenly.

3. Repurpose a Tree Stump

Instead of hiring a removal team to grind it away, give it new life. The wood will supply your flowers with vital nutrients that they need to thrive, and the stump will break down a little bit as you water the flowers, making it less of an eyesore overall. Again, have someone handy hollow out the stump, or, if it’s soft enough, create a small opening for planting. Add potting soil and then fill it up with the plants of your choice.
