Insurance agents can attest that motorcyclists are incredibly vulnerable in traffic. Even riders following the rules of the road are hard to see, especially at busy intersections. If you keep a few simple tips in mind whenever you get behind the wheel, though, you can increase the chances that both you and the riders around you will stay safe.

3 Tips for Sharing the Road With Motorcyclists

1. Scan for Riders

Always check your mirrors and blind spots before turning or changing lanes. Make sure to signal properly, as well, so you don't catch nearby riders off-guard. Since motorcycles don't provide any protection from forceful impacts, even sideswipe accidents at fairly low speeds can be catastrophic.

2. Avoid Tailgating

insuranceBecause motorcycles are so much less imposing than cars, trucks, and SUVs, it’s fairly easy to travel behind them too closely. Riders don’t always brake to decelerate, though; often, they simply release the throttle or downshift. As such, their brake lights won't always light up to alert the motorists behind them of their reduced speed.

Since it takes longer to register a decelerating vehicle that’s not exhibiting any visible signs, leave adequate stopping distance between your own vehicle and any bikes ahead of you in traffic.

3. Be Predictable

Changing lanes abruptly, stopping short, and running red lights put both you and everyone in traffic around you at risk of a serious accident. Predictability is especially important for motorcyclists, who rely on drivers to follow the rules of the road in order to maneuver safely around them.

If your blinker isn't on, for example, but you decide to turn at the intersection anyway, you could end up striking a rider who assumed you were going straight.

While the above tips will keep you from causing a wreck, there’s no way to control those in traffic around you. Should you end up in an accident anyway, the team at Accredited Insurance Group, Inc. will have your back.
