When it comes to securing your home, locks are your top means of defense. There are many different types to choose from, each with varying degrees of security. Your lock installation can even include more than one kind for added safety. Here’s what you need to know about the most popular types of locks to choose the best options for your home.

A Guide to Different Door Locks

1. Deadbolt

Deadbolts are typically used on external doors in combination with a separate lock to provide an extra layer of security. They are well-known for being tough against forced entry attempts. The most common types of deadbolts are single and double cylinder, the latter of which offers a greater defense.

2. Lever Handle Lock

Lever handles are easy to open and convenient for homeowners, but their locks are not impervious to forced entry and lock picking. Because of this, they are most often used for interior doors like bathrooms and bedrooms. They feature a twist knob on one side and a key cylinder on the other.

3. Doorknob Lock

lock installationKnob locks are a common choice for residential lock installations. They can be used on just about any door in the home, including the front. Like lever handle locks, they have a key cylinder on one side and a rotating knob on the other. Doorknob locks are vulnerable to brute force, so those on exterior doors should always be accompanied by a secondary lock.

4. Chain Lock

Chain locks consist of a locking assembly affixed to the door, a catch on the frame, and a chain to secure the door. Sliding the chain into the locking assembly prevents the door from opening more than a few inches. It won’t open fully until you close it and remove the chain, allowing you to peek outside while preventing intruders from entering. This type of lock is always used as added security for a primary lock.

5. Padlock

The main benefit of padlocks is that they are portable and can be used anywhere with a hasp, chain, or cable. The most common types include combination padlocks, which require a code to open, and keyed padlocks. They are not typically used for residential doors. Instead, they secure belongings, sheds, and fences.
