A clean home is a healthy home. But unlike spills and scattered toys, some messes aren’t so easy to see. Pollutants, including pet dander, mold spores, pollen, and dust mites, can circulate indoors and cause allergy symptoms and other respiratory issues. Fortunately, there are techniques to remove these allergens from the air while improving AC and heating system efficiency.

How to Enjoy Better Indoor Air Quality

1. Clean Regularly

Dust and debris on furniture and the surface of your floor can get stirred up as people and animals walk through the room. Dust, vacuum carpets and upholstery, and sweep floors regularly to prevent particles from filling the air. You may also want to institute a no-shoes policy in the house, as shoes can carry mold spores, pollen, and fertilizer from outdoors.

2. Replace or Clean the Filter

heating systemAC and heating system air filters keep dirt, dust, and pollutants from circulating in your home. Most filters should be cleaned or replaced once per season. However, if you have a pet that sheds or household members with trouble breathing, do so more frequently. Filters with a MERV rating of 11 to 13 are most efficient at collecting allergens without restricting airflow to the system.

3. Invest in Duct Cleaning

Even with switching out your air conditioning and heating system filters regularly, mold, dirt, dust, and other particles can collect in your ductwork over time. Airflow can then push these particles back into circulation.

Mold, in particular, may cause allergy symptoms or, in the case of black mold, more serious health issues. Most HVAC contractors suggest scheduling air duct cleaning every three to five years.

4. Buy an Air Purifier

For even cleaner air, consider investing in an air purifier, which captures and removes pollutants. These are particularly helpful if a member of your family has allergies, asthma, or a respiratory condition such as COPD. Many AC and heating systems can be installed with an air purifier or you can purchase a standalone unit.
