The U.S. Occupation Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issues strict guidelines to protect the needs of workers on job sites. Bathrooms are a point of focus. It’s important to adhere to these regulations when renting portable toilets, and you’ll find everything you need to prepare for an upcoming job site below.

Portable Toilet Requirements

OSHA requires that ample toilets and bathroom facilities are provided on all job sites, regardless of their size or the scope of work. The regulations state that one portable toilet is necessary for 20 or fewer employees. For job sites of 20 or more, one toilet seat and one urinal per 40 workers are required. Job sites with 200 or more employees require one toilet seat and one urinal per every 50 workers.

Sanitation & Feature Requirements

Units need to be well-lit, ventilated, and include soap, water, or hand sanitizer for workers’ safety. They need to be restocked accordingly, and there should be trash receptacles for hygiene products and paper towels.

Efficiency Requirements

OSHA defines “nearby” toilets as those that take less than 10 minutes to get to on foot, or at larger sites, by vehicle. This is for both convenience and to prevent delays. Workers need to have prompt access to portable toilets.

If keys are required for toilet access, or if workers have to sign out, you need to develop a system, so this doesn’t lead to delays. The toilet quantity should also be adjusted to prevent delays. If the OSHA-recommended amount of facilities isn’t enough, add another portable toilet to the job site to prevent lines and delays.
