Bedbugs commonly infest bedrooms, where they feed on human blood and leave itchy welts across the body. Luckily, there are bedbug treatments to remove them if they infiltrate your child’s room. Learn how to spot the signs of an infestation and what pest management solutions to employ if it happens.

Signs a Home Requires Bedbug Treatment

It’s uncommon to see bedbugs out in the open because they’re only about five millimeters long and typically active at night. If you think your child’s room may have an infestation, look for physical evidence, like shed skin or fecal spots and bloodstains on the mattress and bedding.

Bedbugs can fit into tiny spaces, so also check the box springs, headboard, inside of drawer joints, under loose wall paper, and in between any chair cushions.

If your child wakes up with new bite marks on their body, this likely means the bugs are coming out to feed in the night. A bedbug bite is small and red with a darker patch in the middle. Several may appear in a line or group in one area.

Bedbug Treatment & Prevention

Bedbug TreatmentIf your child has bedbug bites, they’ll likely experience itching and perhaps even a burning sensation. Use an anti-itch cream or calamine lotion to alleviate the symptoms. You can also give them an oral antihistamine or over-the-counter pain reliever.

It’s best to prevent an infestation from ever occurring. In general, avoid purchasing secondhand furniture, which may harbor a hidden infestation. Keep your child’s room free of clutter to eliminate hiding spots, and vacuum frequently to get rid of any bugs present.

If an infestation does occur, act quickly to prevent it from spreading. Wash and dry all bedding, clothes, and toys that can go through the washer at high heats to kill the bugs. While washing the bedding, use a stiff brush on the mattress to sweep out any pests, then vacuum the entire room thoroughly.
