With spring around the corner, now is the perfect time to dust off your lawn mower and think about the best ways to get your property looking its best. After all, if you wait too long into the season to care for your lawn, you’ll have a lot of work to do throughout the rest of the year to keep it healthy. To get an early start on your springtime lawn maintenance, check out these helpful tips.

Spring Lawn Care Tips

1. Fertilize

Fertilizer will help your grass receive the nutrients it needs to thrive. It can also be applied with a preemergent weed killer to prevent unwanted plant growth from taking over your yard. Ideally, you should use these products in the early days of spring, and once again six to eight weeks later. Compost and mulch are also natural alternatives to the chemical-based fertilizers, but remember that they aren’t deterrents against weeds.

2. Rake

lawn mowerRaking is a chore that many people do in the fall, but not so much during the spring. Even if you cleared leaves off your property before the winter, leaves, branches, twigs, and debris can still accumulate. You’ll also need a rake to remove thatch, which is a layer of dead grass shoots that spring up between grass blades and the soil. Having a half-inch layer of thatch helps insulate the soil against extreme temperatures, but a thicker layer can damage the grass roots.

3. Mow

One of the problems with springtime lawn care is homeowners don’t use their lawn mowers often enough. If you wait until the grass is long before you cut it, you can accidentally stunt the growth of the roots, which will leave the lawn looking shorter and thinner. Mow the grass every five days for the first month of the season, and don’t let the grass exceed two inches in length before cutting. Then, only trim a third of it down.
